Interstellar Poster Analysis

The film poster presented here is a poster for the sci-fi movie, Interstellar, made by Christopher Nolan in 2015. The featured cast are Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine.

To start off, we will focus on the object that the poster is focusing on. We can tell that the supposed spaceship is the focus on this. By using the rule of thirds, we can see that the middle of the ship is perfectly aligned on the lines which makes it clear that it wants us to focus on the space ship. Because that the poster is focusing on the spaceship, we can already assume that this movie is in the sci-fi genre as the ship looks very futuristic with it in an odd shape and being mainly white. White is linked with objects that are futuristic as many movies portray futuristic objects by using the color white. Objects that have odd shapes are also considered futuristic as again, many forms of media portray futuristic objects in odd shapes.By looking at the background, we can already tell that this is going to be set in space as it is filled with stars and nebulas which can only be seen clearly in space. However, we can see that the background is also distorted as if it’s a giant glass sphere. We can assume that the ship in the poster is going light-speed as many sci-fi movies distort the background if the ship is going at light-speed or that they are

going near a black hole as the right side of the poster is slightly black, showing that they are near a black hole and might be prepared to enter it. In the background, the colors red and blue can be seen. With the blue and red flickers present, it could be giving us hints that this movie will have scientific theories used in this movie and possibly try to tell us their ideas about the theories.

The cast of this movie is presented on top of the poster because they are very famous. Famous actors can attract lots of people as actors usually have a large fan base and they are interested in seeing what work they participate in and this is called Star Appeal.

The chosen word for this movie’s name “Interstellar” means an event that is occurring between stars, this further strengthens that this movie is a sci-fi movie and that it involves going into outer space. The word “Stellar” is also highlighted with stars which the movie wants the audience to clearly know that this movie is going to involve outer space.

By looking at the text in the poster, we can see that it is all white, as said before, white is usually associated with futurism and with the text mostly in capital, it is also somehow related with futurism as lots of people use capital letters to somehow signify futurism. With all of this in mind, the audience automatically recognizes that this movie is in some way futuristic with the words capitalized and in white.
